San Jose Shelter to Hold Free Dog Giveaway for Veterans

23 May

This weekend marks a very special day in America. On Monday, we honor our fallen soldiers here in the U.S. and around the world. People have also started to use Memorial Day to remember those whom they have lost as well. In honor of this special day, “the San Jose Animal Care Center is holding a free dog adopting event for military veterans Friday through Sunday.” What better way to help Veterans celebrate knowing the brave men and women as friends who have fallen in battle than to start a new friendship with an animal that will forever represent the memories of their former friends. Below is the article:

In honor of Memorial Day and with a “critical mass” of animals filling its cages, the San Jose Animal Care Center is holding a free dog adoption event for military veterans Friday through Sunday.

Anyone with valid military identification who meets standard adoption criteria is eligible for a free dog, and there are currently more than 100 canines to choose from.

“We’ve never done this before, and we always wanted to do something for veterans,” said shelter spokeswoman Julie St. Gregory. “Coincidentally, we have an extremely high number of dogs right now.”

She said they usually have about 40 dogs at any given time, but “we’re getting more dogs than ever dropped off this year, and don’t know exactly why.”

There are no additional fees, and the dogs are all microchipped, licensed, have all vaccinations and are spayed or neutered. While only veterans are eligible for the free adoption, civilians are also invited to the event.

Standard adoption fees are $115 for an adult dog, $135 for a puppy. Adoption criteria includes proof that the dog will have a landlord-approved home, and a meeting with other animals and children who live at the home.

“We want to make sure that everybody gets along, and that the dogs are wanted,” St. Gregory said.

The shelter, at 2750 Monterey Road in San Jose, will be open 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. It will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.
